RUPP Arena Blood Drive

For the past 4 years I have made it a point to get downtown for the blood drive at RUPP Arena. It is always a nice little perk that goes along with donating blood. Last year was the first time that Jennifer ever donated and it went fine, so she said that she would do it again.
I enjoyed looking around at the new logo and new court design too!
One of the workers tried to help Landon hit a shot, but he wasn't any taller than I was so it was to no avail. One day Landon will be big enough to hit one.

I had Jennifer take a video of me shooting a three pointer. It made for a nice slow motion video, but the only problem was that it took me five attempts in order to hit the shot. Maybe I could blame it on wearing sandals to shoot in!
Family photo out at center court of RUPP Arena! I am not sure how I would feel if there was 24,000+ people sitting out in the stands watching us.

The kids practicing being the Y for the spelling out of Kentucky! If you have ever been to a game at RUPP then you know the cheerleaders spell out KENTUCKY during a timeout and a famous person or former player will get to complete the spelling by being the "Y". Maybe one day one of the kids will get to do it in a real game.

The kids were getting restless so we had to make a stop over at the snack area. Nothing calms them down like a bag of popcorn! This year it was an especially long wait because they got the guys from Kentucky Sports Radio to come out and do their show to promote the blood drive. Well, I am thankful that they did because it got so many more people out to donate, but they were not prepared for the increased response. We ended up waiting about 2 hours and that was even with an appointment which helped us skip some of the lines.

In the past they have always had a child area where kids could play and a volunteers could sit with them. This year I guess the increase in donors made them take this person off child watch to do something else. My kids did find the toys to play with and decided to work a puzzle right there on the court. Not sure if many people can say that they have done that!

It was finally time to donate and Jennifer got to go first. I was going to stay with the kids for a few minutes longer before it was my turn. I explained to the kids that we were going to be right over in those chairs for a few minutes and that they could continue to work on their puzzle. They agreed and said they would stay right there. We were both seated where we could continue to watch the children. At one point they moved around and a box was blocking my view of them. I just kept my eyes right on that box to see when they came out. Problem is that they never did. It wasn't until a few minutes later that I heard someone saying that there was a lost little boy. I turned my head around and there was Landon with one of the workers. Jennifer had said that while she was donating her phlebotomist said to her that there was a lost little 2 year old and she asked her if she had any children and Jennifer said yes. The lady said it was a little boy wearing a basketball jersey and then Jennifer knew it was hers. She started calling out Landon's name to try and get him to come over to her. The worker then stayed with them until we finished up.

In the middle of donating blood. I am a huge proponent of being a donor and have given over 4 gallons over the past several years.

One more picture of me and my boy out at center court. Sometimes he is truly my little mini me.

Donating blood saves lives everyday for people who are sick and need a transfusion. In fact, my father needed 6 units of blood during his recent health problems. We also give a ton of blood to our pediatric cancer patients at the hospital and I know that there is always a need for more donors. It usually takes about 20-30 minutes for the whole donation process. Please make it a point to at least try and donate sometime this year and you can help save a life!
